For as little as $15 a year, you can join the Battle Creek Nature
Education Society (BCNES) and help provide quality environmental education
programs to students and adults.
Who is BCNES?
Battle Creek Nature Education Society (BCNES) incorporated in 1985 as a
non-profit charitable organization providing supplemental financial support
for the educational programs of
Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary,
Flag Ponds Nature Park and
Kings
Landing Park in partnership with the Calvert County Natural Resources
Division.
These three Calvert County Parks are peerless examples of the ecological
diversity found in Southern Maryland Region. Flag Ponds protects
approximately 500 acres of natural area on the Chesapeake Bay from beach to
upland. Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary protects 100 acres of one of
the northernmost stands of baldcypress trees in the United States. Kings
Landing protects over 265 acres of natural area on the Patuxent River
including 4,000 feet of river shoreline and 50 acres of marshland. Each
offers significant opportunities for outdoor learning and compatible
recreation.
With fiscal support from BCNES, the Natural Resources Division
significantly contributes to the environmental education requirements of
thousands of elementary through high school students from Maryland, Virginia
and the District of Columbia providing hands-on, inquiry learning
experiences about our local natural resources and the environment in
general. With more than 50,000 annual casual visitors, we seek to excite our
guests to learn more about environmental issues and the need to become
advocates and stewards of the environment.
