Things That Go Bump in the Night

Friday, October 10                        6:30-8:00 p.m.

As the sun sets and the darkness spreads like a thick blanket across your eyes, even the most familiar places take on an air of mystery.  A cooler on a picnic table can become a BIG BEAR!  A skunk digging in the leaves for grubs can become a MONSTER searching you out!  Come gather around a fire for pizza and enjoy tales of both real nocturnal animals and the imagined ghoulies and ghosties!  Fee:  $5.00 per person/$3.00 BCNES members (under age 2 free).

**Not recommend for children under 6.

Big Tree Tour

Saturday, October 18

9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Calvert County abounds with history, both natural and human!  This year we'll focus on the darker side of Calvert County history and supernatural tree lore as we visit the county's historic and ghostly haunts and most "spook-tacular" trees.  If you haven’t had a chance to come on this tour of the county's big trees and historic sites, don't miss out on this great opportunity!  Box lunch will be provided.  The tour will be co-led by Tania Gale (Naturalist, Battle Creek Nature Center), Kirsti Uunila (Historic Preservation Planner, Calvert County Planning and Zoning), and Steve Stadelman (Forester, Calvert County Forestry Board).  FEE - $30.00/$25.00 BCNES members.  Begins at Battle Creek Cypress Swamp.

****Must be registered and paid by - Oct 9th****

GREEN HOUR: Aquatic Insects

Saturday, October 25

10:00-11:00 a.m.

Join other families as we dip net in the swamp at Flag Ponds.  Search for amazing aquatic insects such as ferocious baby bugs, bugs that swim upside down, and even bugs that breathe through snorkels.  Since we will spend most of our time outdoors in the swamp, each family might want to bring a small backpack with water bottles and insect repellant.  Meet at the education building.
