Kids 'N' Critters

These programs introduce youngsters to the many wonders of our natural environment through stories, puppets, songs and outdoor hands-on activities.

Ages 3 to  5 with adult

Reservations are required

Fee per child:  $3.00 ;  BCNES members $1.00

Flower Walk

Tuesday,  September 2                 10:00-11:30 a.m.

              Come join the park ranger as we wander the meadow lands in search of late summer blossoms. We'll use baskets for gathering and spread a blanket for lunch. Bring mom or dad, a bag lunch. Lemonade provided for all little hikers!

The Not So Quiet Crickets

Saturday, September  27                10:00 -11:30 a.m.

              Early fall nights are full of chirping.  We'll take an "up close and personal" look at the critters that make those noises - crickets.  We'll read a story, head out to the meadow to visit the crickets and their neighbors, and end with a snack.

Mud Pies Mud Pots

Tuesday, September 16                

10:00-11:30 a.m.

             Clay lies in abundance at the river's edge. Early Americans made use of it by making pots for food and other materials. We'll gather clay and make our own pinch pots to take home. Wear clothes to get dirty, bring mom or dad and we'll supply treats for all little potters!  Location:  Kings Landing Park   

 
 
 

Woodland Journals

Tuesday, October 7                         

10:00-11:30 a.m.

Autumn is here and what better time to explore wooded trails and note changes in the seasons? We'll construct a simple woodland journal using materials we gather from the forest floor. Bring mom or dad and wear shoes for hiking. Treats provided for all little hikers!  Location:  Kings Landing Park 

 
 

What's Falling in Fall?

Leaves are falling to the ground - so are acorns and hickory nuts.  We'll explore some of the changes that happen to plants and animals this time of year and then head outside for some fall fun! 

Location:  Battle Creek Cypress Swamp. 

 
 

Native American Trickster Tales

Tuesday, October 21                         10:00-11:30 a.m.

 Come and play act animal roles as storyteller in the Native American tradition. We will learn about coyote's rabbit chase, bluebird and fox and more. Bring mom or dad for outdoor story fun. Treats provided for all good animal actors!  Location:  Kings Landing Park    

 
 

                   

Big Prints, Little Prints

Tuesday, November 4      

10:00-11:30 a.m.

             Let's go outside to explore the woods, the streams and the wetlands. We'll search for signs of our four legged and two legged friends at the park. Wear good walking shoes, bring mom or dad, and a bag lunch for the trail. Treats for all!

Turkey Time!

Tuesday, November 18                     10:00-11:30 a.m.

Thanksgiving is near so it's time to talk turkey. Come dressed for the weather as we go in search of the elusive big bird. Bring mom or dad, pack a sandwich for lunch, we'll supply the soup!

The Fall Find!

Wednesday, November 19    10:00-11:30 a.m.

What's happening in the swamp and surrounding area this time of year?  Does it seem like winter yet - or is it still fall?  We'll play inside and then go for a walk to see what we can find - maybe leaves, maybe spiders, or maybe the wind!
