For people who want to find out more about volunteering through our Calvert Stewards projects, discover what it means to be a Calvert Steward, and learn about the projects that are happening throughout the year.

We encourage everyone who might be interested in our projects to attend. New and returning volunteers will gain insight into the recent volunteer activities. Current volunteers can share their experiences and make recommendations for the future.

After a short indoor presentation and Q&A, we'll work on a service project.

Some activities are suitable for families. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. You can complete the volunteer application before, during or after to orientation.

    Location: Battle Creek Cypress Swamp

We plan to hold these Orientations monthly at the different nature parks.

If you cannot attend this orientation, send in your volunteer application and we'll contact you about other times to learn about the program.

This lecture is one of our on-going programs to acknowledge the roles the Calvert Stewards volunteers have in better understanding of the natural heritage of Calvert County. Doors open at 6 pm, come early to chat with other volunteers. This program is open to the general public.

Speaker: Greg Kearns, Naturalist, Patuxent River Park

Greg Kearns has been monitoring bird populations throughout the Patuxent watershed for thirty years. His studies documented a decrease in the migratory Sora rails which he attributed to the decline of Wild Rice in the tidal freshwater marshes. His work documented the role of resident Canada Geese had in the reducing, and nearly eliminating, the Wild Rice.

He is tracking Sora rails using light-weight transmitters to understand their migration patterns along the East Coast. These birds are tracked through a network of towers across the United States and Canada to track tagged birds 24/7. This Motus wildlife tracking system is a collaborative effort by researchers started by the Bird Studies Canada organization.

Greg will provide preliminary data on this study, and discuss the collaboration possibilities with Calvert County Natural Resources Division and Calvert Nature Society. The Motus tracking system can be applied to the Barn Owl and American Kestrel nest box projects to better understand where the adults and fledglings head to after leaving our nest boxes. Through the Calvert Stewards volunteer program, this new Citizen Science initiative will provide important details on the breeding and migratory populations throughout North America of these hard-to-track species.

    Location: Battle Creek Cypress Swamp

Program is Free, thanks to the generous support of the Cove Point Natural Heritage Trust.

    Register

For teens or adults, ages 15 and up.

We are always looking for an extra hand to take care of the nature center's live animals. As you accompany staff, you will learn how to clean cages, feed the animals and handle them. Once you are trained, you will be able to sign up to care for the animals as often as you'd like.

Trained volunteers are welcome to register too. They can help train new volunteers and can help hold the raptors while the naturalist trims talons, etc.
