These programs offer adults, and older teens, and opportunity to explore and learn about the natural world.  Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Program Fees: Unless noted programs are free for members; $8 per person for nonmember

Some programs charge slightly more due to materials and supplies.

    Volunteers are needed to help our staff with the maintenance and upkeep of the trails and gardens around Battle Creek Nature Center. From invasive plant removal, to routine garden care, to maintaining the nature play space and trails - there is always something to be done.  Volunteers must be able to perform moderately strenuous physical tasks.

    Eagles, ducks, geese and more! We will enjoy a leisurely two mile hike as we visit the swamp, ponds and beach to learn visual and auditory identification techniques.

    Dress for the weather, wear comfortable hiking shoes, and bring binoculars if you have them. Binoculars will be available to borrow.

    For Current Volunteers (Adults only)

    From eagles to owls and ducks to geese who knows what we could see as we go birding at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. This area is a major stayover and migration stop for many birds along the east coast. 

    This trip is open to Calvert Stewards who have volutneered during the past year. Thanks for everything you do!

    Location: Meet at Kings Landing Park.   We will then travel to the eastern shore in the county vans.

    Learn to identify some of our evergreen plants. We’ll explore the forests in search of the ferns, herbaceous plants, and trees that are green in the winter. 

    Wear warm clothes for standing around outside (we won't be moving very fast). Bring a snack or lunch if you think you'll get hungry.

    Optional but useful to bring 10x hand lens, binoculars, field guides.

    Join other volunteers for this evening of fellowship, fire, and food. Learn more about campfire cooking and eat a dinner you make yourself cooked over the fire.

    This event is for participants 21 years and older.

    Think you are a nature expert??? Well grab your friends and come test out your skills at Nature Trivia! Scorpion Brewery will be hosting this trivia event and providing the beer. There is a cash prize for the team finishing in first as well as door prizes. We will provide some light snacks but you are welcome to bring snacks too. Registration will start at 6:30 p.m. and trivia will start promptly at 7:00 p.m.

    Team Registration Fee: $60    

    The registration fee supports all of our education programs.

    Max Team size: 6

    Registration Deadline: February 12, 2017

    Team Fee must be paid to be considered registered.

    Don't know who will be on your team? Not a problem. Register anyway, and we can add team members later.

    Rules

    • Must be 21 years or older. Picture ID required.
    • Team must have a team name.
    • Up to 6 people (physically present) per team. Minimum team size is one person.
    • Every person at the team table will be counted as part of your maximum team size.
    • No cell/smartphone or other outside information source. We will have a cell phone parking lot in the room. You may not use your cell phone during a round until your team’s answers are turned in to the judge.
    • There is no partial credit for an answer.
    • The quiz master will be the final arbiter of correct answers and scoring. 
    • Any rule not listed here may be made up on the spot by the quiz master, Gene Groshon.
    • Current employees of Calvert County Natural Resources, members of the Calvert Nature Society Board of Directors, or their families, may not be a team member.

    Eastern Neck Wildlife Refuge is a hidden gem on the eastern shore providing great habitat for wintering eagles and waterfowl. It’s also a great spot to see Tundra Swans feeding along the shore. Bring your binoculars and we will see what we can find!

    After a short presentation about our Prothonotary Warbler Study, volunteers will borrow some waders and trek into the swamp to learn the nest box locations and prepare them for the season.  Interested volunteers can monitor them as little as once or as many as 12 times between April and July.

    Since we have a limited number of waders up to size 12, please let us know your shoe size when you register so that we can try to have enough waders for everyone.

    Our amazing Chesapeake Bay is a rest stop for many birds that are passing through on their way farther north to nest. Learn the silhouettes and sounds of spring migrating birds while taking a leisurely hike along the trails.
