Teen Homeschool Kayak Series (04/14/2026)

For students ages 12-16 years old

Our spring Teen Homeschool classes will be a 3-part series focused on kayaking and exploring the ecology of the Patuxent River and its tributaries. Each month, we will head out in kayaks to investigate different stretches of the river and the surrounding wetlands, observing how these ecosystems change with the season. Along the way, we’ll use nets, water-quality testing equipment, and our own senses to study the health of the river and discover the plants and animals that call this watershed home.

Because each session builds on the skills and knowledge of the previous one, we expect teens to attend all three sessions. No parent is needed on the water, but participants must be at least 12 years old.

Teen Homeschool Kayak Series (05/19/2026)

Nature Art (05/24/2026)

All ages are welcome!

Enjoy a fun-filled day blending nature exploration with creative art.
While we wander the boardwalk and meadow trails of Battle Creek Cypress Swamp, we will take time to observe and sketch the wonders around us. Along the way, we’ll pause to draw whatever captures our attention—turtles basking in the sun, darting dragonflies, whirligig beetles swirling on the water’s surface, or even the iconic cypress “knees” rising from the swamp.

We’ll also gather a few natural materials during our walk to incorporate into a unique craft, adding a personal touch to your nature journal. It’s the perfect day for artists, nature lovers, and anyone who wants to slow down and connect with the outdoor world through creativity.

Night Owls Summer Camp (07/07/2026)

For youth entering grades 6-8 in fall 2026

Summer nights are pure magic—frogs and crickets singing their chorus, fireflies twinkling among the trees, and the world settling into a softer, quieter rhythm. This camp invites teen adventurers to step outside and discover the mysteries of the night.

Throughout the week, campers will explore the beach, swamp, and forest after sunset, learning what makes nocturnal animals so extraordinary. Campers will go on an owl prowl, learn how fireflies communicate and stomp the swamp in search of amphibians. We’ll take guided night hikes, play glowing flashlight games, spin silly “tall tales” around the campfire, and whip up our own campfire snacks all while we wonder under the stars.

Naturalist In Charge: Jessy Oberright

Fee per camper:
New Adventures Summer Camp (08/04/2026)

Children entering grades 1st and 2nd in Fall 2026

Remember the magic of summer camp—the forest hikes that felt like grand adventures, the silly stories around crackling campfires, the zany songs that got stuck in your head, and the wet-and-wild water games that left everyone laughing? This camp brings all those timeless traditions to life for a new generation of young campers.

Perfect for first-time adventurers, this program introduces kids to the joy of the outdoors through classic camp activities in a shorter session format. Each day is filled with hands-on discoveries that build confidence, spark curiosity, and encourage teamwork, nature exploration, camp crafts, games and water play. We will even have a campfire and make our own snacks. Campers will explore nature in fun, age-appropriate ways while making memories and friendships that last long after summer ends.

It’s the perfect way to start a lifelong love of the outdoors—and to capture a little of that old-fashioned summer camp magic.

Naturalist in Charge: Jessy Oberright
