These programs offer adults, and older teens, and opportunity to explore and learn about the natural world.  Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Program Fees: Unless noted programs are free for members; $8 per person for nonmember

Some programs charge slightly more due to materials and supplies.

    Ever wanted to know more about the birds in our area? We will go on a hike and practice using field guides to identify the birds we find in the forest and along the beach.

    Volunteers are needed to help prepare Battle Creek for the Cypress Swamp Romp. Tasks include tidying up the nature play space and walking trails, raking the campfire area, and picking up any roadside debris.

    Enjoy a summer evening with your fellow Calvert Steward volunteers! Enjoy the light snacks we'll provide, or you can buy ice cream, frozen yogurt, or even a glass of wine at one of the nearby shops. Share your stories and adventures with other volunteers, and learn about all the things Calvert Stewards do in the nature parks and beyond!

    We'll wind down the evening with a stroll on the beach and boardwalk--maybe even document the horseshoe crabs mating!

    Park in one of the municipal lots on Chesapeake Avenue at 5th street or behind Chesapeake Bounty. Limited on-street parking available.

    For teens or adults, ages 15 and up.

    We are always looking for an extra hand to take care of the nature center's live animals. As you accompany staff, you will learn how to clean cages, feed the animals and handle them. Once you are trained, you will be able to sign up to care for the animals as often as you'd like.

    Trained volunteers are welcome to register too and can help train new volunteers.

    Help the naturalist search for monarch caterpillars in the meadow and gardens for the 2018 Monarch Larva Monitoring Project. This volunteer opportunity is one of many that will be offered throughout the summer and fall to help improve conservation efforts for monarch butterflies.

    Experience a ghost hunt while listening to tales of the haunted and supernatural history of Kings Landing and Calvert County.  We'll use professional ghost hunting equipment on a late night tour through the woods in search of the unseen. Be prepared for a night hike: boots, flashlights, jacket

    Enjoy a peaceful paddle as we wind slowly along marshy channels looking for animals waking up and on the move.

    Special registration information: Participants may bring their own paddles and life vests.

    Our amazing Chesapeake Bay is a rest stop for many migrating birds. We will start by reviewing shorebird identification skills indoors. Outside we will look for the silhouettes and sounds of birds while taking a leisurely hike along the beach.

    Dress for the weather, wear comfortable hiking shoes, and bring binoculars if you have them. Binoculars will be available to borrow.

    A special opportunity for our Calvert Stewards volunteers. 

    Fall migration will begin for many raptor species in late August. We will head up to Waggoner's Gap Hawk Watch to observe raptors migrating along the ridges and mountaintops. There will be a good chance at seeing Broad Wing Hawks, Eagles, Kestrels and more! We will meet at Kings Landing Park then travel to the watch spot north of Carlisle, PA in the county vans.  We will stop for dinner (pay on your own) on the way back possibly at Chubby's BBQ in Emmitsburg MD and will plan to be back at Kings Landing by 8-8:30 pm
