Special Events and Programs for Adults

These programs offer adults, and older teens, and opportunity to explore and learn about the natural world.  Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Program Fees: Unless noted programs are free for members; $8 per person for nonmember

Some programs charge slightly more due to materials and supplies.

    For adults, although teens 16 years and older may attend.

    All trees do not look alike in winter! We'll learn the basics of plant identification using winter keys and field guides, then take a hike to use our knowledge (so make sure you bring outdoor weather clothes). This program is designed for those with little or no experience and will focus on twigs, buds, and bark. Geared for adults, but teens 16 or older may attend.

    Optional: field guides, hand lens Bring: Hand lens, binoculars, cameras. Wear comfortable walking shoes & dress for the weather.

    Adult Program

    Raptors are an important part of our ecosystem but they are facing some hard times these days.  Come learn about what is being done to study these birds and help save them. Naturalist Gene Groshon share stories from the 2 weeks he spent working with a raptor researcher in Wisconsin.

    Our amazing Chesapeake Bay provides winter habitat for many migratory ducks. We will start by reviewing identification skills indoors. Outside we will look for the silhouettes and sounds of diving ducks while taking a leisurely hike along the beach.

    Dress for the weather, wear comfortable hiking shoes, and bring binoculars if you have them. Binoculars will be available to borrow.

    We are always looking for an extra hand to take care of the nature center's live animals. As you accompany staff, you will learn how to clean cages, feed the animals and handle them. Once you are trained, you will be able to sign up to care for the animals as often as you'd like.

    Learn to identify some of our evergreen plants. We’ll explore the forests in search of the ferns, herbaceous plants, and trees that are green in the winter. 

    Wear warm clothes for standing around outside (we won't be moving very fast). Bring a snack or lunch if you think you'll get hungry.

    Optional but useful to bring 10x hand lens, binoculars, field guides.

    We’ll take a short stroll along the fields near the parking area listening for the breeding display of the American Woodcock (also known as a Timberdoodle). Dress for the weather. Due to rough terrain of the trails this activity is not wheelchair accessible.

    This event is for participants 21 years and older.

    Think you are a nature expert??? Well grab your friends and come test out your skills at Nature Trivia! Mully's Brewery will be hosting this trivia event and providing the beer. There is a cash prize for the team finishing in first as well as door prizes. We will provide some light snacks but you are welcome to bring snacks too. Registration will start at 6:30 p.m. and trivia will start promptly at 7:00 p.m.

    Team Registration Fee: $60    

    The registration fee supports all of our education programs.

    Max Team size: 6

    Registration Deadline: Tuesday, Feb 5

    Team Fee must be paid to be considered registered.

    Don't know who will be on your team? Not a problem. Register anyway, and we can add team members later.

    Rules

    • Must be 21 years or older. Picture ID required.
    • Team must have a team name.
    • Up to 6 people (physically present) per team. Minimum team size is one person.
    • Every person at the team table will be counted as part of your maximum team size.
    • No cell/smartphone or other outside information source. We will have a cell phone parking lot in the room. You may not use your cell phone during a round until your team’s answers are turned in to the judge.
    • There is no partial credit for an answer.
    • The quiz master will be the final arbiter of correct answers and scoring. 
    • Any rule not listed here may be made up on the spot by the quiz master, Gene Groshon.
    • Current employees of Calvert County Natural Resources, members of the Calvert Nature Society Board of Directors, or their families, may not be a team member.

    For Families with children ages 8 and up.

    Don’t miss this great opportunity to explore one of the lesser known Calvert County Natural Resource Division areas – Ward Farm Recreation and Nature Park. We’ll hike through the woods to search for vernal pools and streams fed by spring rains – looking for spring wildflowers and amphibians along the way. Wear your rain boots and wear clothes that can get muddy. 

     Adult participation is required.  No younger siblings please. This hike is not be suitable for younger children as it will be off-trail on uneven ground.

From invasive plant removal, to routine garden care, to maintaining the nature play space and trails - there is always something to be done. Volunteers must be able to perform moderately strenuous physical tasks.

    Before the 2019 nesting season, we need to replace and repair a few nest boxes at Cypress Swamp.  Volunteers can help dig holes, carry materials, attach nest boxes to the posts and trim nearby branches. Please bring work gloves

    Since we have a limited number of waders up to size 13, please let us know your shoe size when you register so that we can try to have enough waders for everyone.

    Join us to create a thatched roof shelter using the exotic invasive grass, Phragmites australis. This pesky plant reduces wetland biodiversity, so we will cut some down and practice creating our own shelter, Fort Phrag!

    Wear clothes that can get dirty, and boots that can go in several inches of water.
