    We need a few volunteers to add plants to our new rain garden at the Flag Ponds Education Building. We'll also weed and trim around the garden as needed. Be dressed to get dirty! We'll have gloves and shovels, but feel free to bring your own.

    We'll also have a sign up for future dates for regular maintenance of the garden.

    Light refreshments will be provided.

    Registrations requested. Free entrance to Flag Ponds for those who register.

    This trip is open to Calvert Stewards who have volunteered during the past year. Thanks for everything you do! 

    Enjoy socializing with staff and volunteers on the 2-hour van ride to Tilghman Island, where we will take an exhilarating boat ride to Poplar Island. Enthusiastic staff from Maryland Environmental Service will take you on a bus tour of the newly-restored island where you will learn about its history and how it has become important habitat for terrapins, fish, and nesting birds. Wildlife will be abundant on the island, including colonies of nesting birds. You may want to bring your binoculars!

    We are always looking for an extra hand to take care of the nature center's live animals. As you accompany staff, you will learn how to clean cages, feed the animals and handle them. Once you are trained, you will be able to sign up to care for the animals as often as you'd like.

Volunteers will spend the morning wading Battle Creek with sampling nets to collect young dragonflies from the water. The dragonfly mercury project is studying the impact and distribution of mercury in the environment.

    Participants may bring their own chest waders if they have them. Not appropriate for children under 13.
