Want to see some horseshoe crabs spawning on the beach by starlight? Join us for this unique chance to see Flag Ponds at night! With luck we will see horseshoe crabs spawning at the water’s edge or maybe bioluminescent comb jellies in the water!

In order to keep groups small this year, we are offering staggered start times.  Each session will begin with a short informative talk about horseshoe crabs and end with a walk along the beach to look for them along the beach.  Please only sign up for one session.

Bring a flashlight, insect repellent, and wear shoes that can get wet. You may want to have a change of clothes for the way home.  Don't forget masks for everyone over the age of 2.

Registration deadline - May 28, 2020

Program Fee:
free for members
$8 per family for nonmembers

Location: Flag Ponds Nature Park

Naturalist in Charge: Tania Gale

COVID Policies and Procedures

The Calvert Nature Society has developed policies and procedures for public program operations based on state and CDC guidelines.

These policies are effective from June 5 until otherwise rescinded:

  • All participants over the age of 2 (including parents) must wear a mask when social distancing is not possible. Participants must provide their own masks.
  • Please consider the safety, health, and well-being of all participants in our programs and stay home if the participant is ill. Full refunds will be given for cancellations due to health concerns.
  • Prior to participation in any Society sponsored program, we will ask each individual, to if under 18 a parent, to complete a participant waiver.

Please review the waiver prior to the program.

You may complete it online and email to CypressSwamp@CalvertCountyMD.gov, or print it and bring to the program. The waiver needs to be completed for each in-person program.

Please read our full policy statement and waiver.

Registration Opening Dates

Programs have staggered registration dates. We advertise programs before registration opens which is why you may see that registration is closed, yet there are spaces available.  See details >

The schedule of events is subject to changed based on the status of the coronavirus response, weather, staffing, and other situations that may arise. If Calvert Nature Society or Calvert County Natural Resources Division cancels a program, a full refund will be issued.
