Family Programs

Families can experience the fascinating natural world in our area. These programs incorporate activities to entertain learners of all ages.

Only a sampling of programs are listed. Check the Calendar of Events page for the full schedule.

Program Fees Unless noted programs are free for Society members; $8 per family for nonmember

Some programs charge slightly more due to materials and supplies.

    Help the naturalist search for monarch caterpillars in the meadow and gardens for the 2018 Monarch Larva Monitoring Project.  This volunteer opportunity is one of many that will be offered throughout the summer and fall to help improve conservation efforts for monarch butterflies.

    For Calvert Nature Society Members, Volunteers and Their Families

    Have a relaxing evening with your family at Flag Ponds Park after hours. Go seining with a naturalist, look for shark's teeth, or simply relax and enjoy the view as the sky changes colors over the bay. Bring a blanket or chairs and a picnic supper, if you'd like. We will provide the s'mores.

    Only registered participants will be provided with information about entry into the park.

    Learn how your family can help monarch butterflies. After a short presentation and hands-on activities, you will venture outside to practice netting and tagging techniques.  If you are interested in watching the 40-minute film Flight of the Monarchs,  it will be shown from 2:30-3:10 pm.

    Don’t miss this great opportunity to explore one of the lesser known areas – Ward Farm Recreation and Nature Park. We’ll hike through the woods to see what the season has to offer.

    This hike is not be suitable for children under the age of five.

    Ever wondered what owls live in Maryland? Come to our owl banding station and learn about what owls could be living in your backyard as well as the migratory Saw-Whet Owls we are studying. We will have a live owl to see and maybe a chance to see a wild Saw Whet Owl.

    For Current Calvert Stewards Volunteers and Their Immediate Family 

    Enjoy a crisp fall evening with your family and other Calvert Stewards.

    We will have a fire going for marshmallows and smores. A variety of fun activities are planned: making apple cider with an old-fashioned cider press, bobbing for apples, carnival games, or you can simply relax and enjoy the view as the sky changes colors over the meadow. Bring a blanket or chairs and a picnic supper, if you wish. We will provide the s'mores.

    We'll end the evening with a night hike (and for teens and adults an ghost tour option).

    Everyone who registers will be entered into door prize drawings held throughout the event. Need not be present to win (but you must be a current volunteer!)

    Most everyone knows how to make s’mores over a fire, but campfire cooking can be so much more. Come discover some new campfire cooking methods and recipes. Dress for the weather - and bring your appetite.

    Let's go for an evergreen scavenger hunt together! We will explore the different types of evergreens that live in our area, then make a holiday decoration together using some evergreens. All materials will be provided.
