When many people think about raptors the first thing that comes to mind is owls.  Hawks and falcons are other common raptors which play an important part in our ecosystem. But they are facing hard times these days.  Come learn about hawk and falcon identification and what is being done to study these birds and help save them. Naturalist Gene Groshon will talk about the current research project in Calvert County to monitor wintering raptor populations and how you can help collect data for this project.

Light Refreshments will be provided.

This lecture is part of an on-going series made possible by a generous grant from the Cove Point Natural Heritage Trust.

Naturalist in charge: Gene Groshon

Location: Battle Creek Cypress Swamp

Registration Deadline: walk ins allowed

This is a free program.

The Calvert Nature Society Presents environmental lecture series is a year-long educational initiative designed to engage Calvert County residents with accessible, informative, and inspiring presentations on environmental topics relevant to Southern Maryland. This series will feature expert-led, one-hour lectures at local locations such as public libraries, community nature centers, and non-profit organizations that would be willing to host public participation. Each lecture will be free and open to the public, aiming to foster environmental stewardship and community-based environmental learning.

In addition to the lectures, the events will showcase local research projects and assessments relating to the natural sciences that have taken place in Southern Maryland – especially the small grant projects that CPNHT supports as well as other volunteer based activities that are contributing to the improvement of the environmental health of our local ecosystem. These showcases would be in in short presentation format, held to a 30 minute length and presented before the primary speaker presentation.
