For students ages 12-16 years old. No parent needed.

Get ready to explore the science behind real-life superpowers. In this hands-on homeschool series, middle schoolers will investigate how humans and animals use their senses to survive and thrive. Each session in this 4-part series reveals fascinating adaptations that help creatures navigate their world. Through experiments and outdoor challenges, students will discover the incredible power of perception—and how their own senses compare to nature’s most extraordinary abilities.

We expect teens to attend all 4 sessions.

The Calvert Nature Society Presents environmental lecture series is a year-long educational initiative designed to engage Calvert County residents with accessible, informative, and inspiring presentations on environmental topics relevant to Southern Maryland. This series will feature expert-led, one-hour lectures at local locations such as public libraries, community nature centers, and non-profit organizations that would be willing to host public participation. Each lecture will be free and open to the public, aiming to foster environmental stewardship and community-based environmental learning.

In addition to the lectures, the events will showcase local research projects and assessments relating to the natural sciences that have taken place in Southern Maryland – especially the small grant projects that CPNHT supports as well as other volunteer based activities that are contributing to the improvement of the environmental health of our local ecosystem. These showcases would be in in short presentation format, held to a 30 minute length and presented before the primary speaker presentation.

Many insects, such as dragonflies, spend the winter hidden beneath the water’s surface, surviving the cold months as nymphs and larvae. Others are specially adapted to appear only in the winter and early spring, making this a unique time to explore their world. During this program, we’ll venture into the wetland habitat at Flag Ponds with dip nets in hand, searching for these often-overlooked creatures. Along the way, we’ll learn how they survive the seasons, what their presence can tell us about the health of the ecosystem, and why wetlands are so important for their life cycles.
